Expert Meeting on Ethical and Legal Issues in Human Embryo Research

An Expert Meeting on Ethical and Legal Issues in Human Embryo Research in the Arab Region was organized by UNESCO Cairo Office in coordination with ISESCO and WHO/EMRO in February 2008.

In the Arab region, most of countries do not allow research on human embryos. Supernumerary embryos produced by infertility treatments can be preserved only for future reproduction. Donation of gametes and embryos for research purposes is generally prohibited.  However in Egypt, it is allowed to use supernumerary embryos for research with strict conditions.
